JET SKIM BOARD Cam Hankins 11 from Waihi Beach
Cam - “Usually I run along jump on and the skim board stops pretty soon. But I want to go longer so my invention will have mini rocket engines that I can fire with a remote. This could be a whole new fun way of getting around.”
Cam visits NZ Skimboard champion Sam Price. He gets a few lessons from Sam who offers to build his invention.
Evan More from the New Zealand Rocketry Association let’s Cam fire a few rockets to get a feel for it. He even gives him a rocket or two to power his invention.
The first test at the beach goes a little crazy and Cam is launched off into the air in a mad spin that has Clinton concerned for his safety.
All is not lost when Hobby City help Cam come up with the idea to attach a motorized fan to his skimboard, but will he complete his Goober Challenge or are the tough terrains of the beach too rough for this invention?
Episode 2 -
BIKE SOCCER Shania Cochrane aged 10 from Temuka
Shania - My invention is the soccer bike. I love BMX but I also love soccer. So I have combined the two and come up with a BMX that can kick the ball with a kicker arm.
Shania’s Goober Challenge is to build the first ever team of Soccer Bikes and complete a 30-minute match on her soccer bikes.
Shania heads to CMI springs to set her invention wheels in motion and tests them out with help from the workshop team.
With bikes and soccer come many obstacles, the biggest of which is how to kick the ball far and fast.
After some tips from the NZ Football Ferns Shania adapts bicycles parts to create a maneuverable goalie bike and uses the inertia of the front wheel to generate massive kicking power for the players.
Shania gathers a team and holds the first ever game of mechanical bike soccer. But is Mr Metal too fast for Shania & her team?
Episode 3 -
David – “My invention is the Mailbox protector. It is designed to help protect your mailbox and catch mailbox bashers. It will have an alarm, paintball gun, sensors and a steel post”.
David’s Goober Challenge is to construct a way to protect his mailbox from vandals and even a way to help catch them on their mail-box munting spree.
There’s been a mystery mailbox attacker in town. Little old ladies are distraught over nighttime sprees. Everyone assumes it’s crazy kids but no-one really knows.
The solution - David and Clinton create a mailbox to transform into a paintball-spewing machine of revenge on those mailbox smashers, a lesson that they’ll never forget. Complete with night vision sensors, tag automatic paintball guns and spotlights this Terminator goes postal on any violent offender.
Unfortunately the Mailbox Protector’s first victim is the unsuspecting mailman who is simply attempting to deliver mail.
A few mods and David and Clinton stake out waiting for the next attack.
The first evening the mailbox raiders who attack the box are pummeled in paintball, crash and get away. It’s still a mystery as to the culprit.
Who could the mailbox basher be?
Episode 4 -
Farmer’s Little Helper
Hi My name’s Chloe Schwass , I’m from Te Awamutu and I absolutely love my calf , she has won me lots of ribbons. At calf club day I noticed the helpers struggling when trying to load the milk into the calf feeder. They almost broke their backs lifting the heavy bucket s of milk. My invention will be able to rise up and down for easy loading. It will be a three in one machine. A feeder, lift and motorbike all in one! The Famers Little Helper!
Chloe’s Goober Challenge is to fill a motorized calf feeder with milk without lifting a bucket and then feed a mob of hungry calves.
Chloe adapts a quad farm bike to carry enough milk to feed her calves & attaches a hydraulic ram to lift the feeders while Chloe sits on the bike steering the way.
After leading Clinton & Chloe into a Rodeo Mr Metal mistakes a bull for a cow and goes on the ride of his life, but what will happen to Clinton & Chloe? Will Chloe make it to her Goober Challenge?
Hungry calves come from every field to drink the milk from the invention that will save the backs of farmers loading buckets of milk into traditional feeders. But will they be able to drink from it?
Episode 5 -
VEGGIE BLASTER Fraser Crail 9 from West Auckland
“Most of my class mates absolutely hate eating vegetables and our parents are always trying to make us eat more of them. So I have designed a fun way for kids to enjoy eating veggies. It’s called the Veggie Blaster. It will fire the veggies into your mouth, making it into a game that all kids will have fun playing”.
“Your Goober Challenge is to get 6 vegetable hating kids to enjoy eating there veggies with the use of your Veggie Blaster!
Fraser creates four exciting ways to fire veges into kids mouths to try and add some excitement to the boring task of healthy eating. With cannons and air powered vege blasters Fraser has fun experimenting on Mr. Metal and Clinton.
Fraser visits MOTATS Military day experts and is inspired by automatic machine guns. He creates a machine gun pea shooter capable of feeding thousands of healthy peas into the mouths of willing victims/diners.
Fraser creates a popular restaurant chain to prove his idea has what it takes to out-do and out-entertain Fast Food joints, but will the kids enjoy eating their veggies?
Episode 6 -
Cluck n Go
CHICKEN 'Go 'FAST Leina Janson 10 from Hastings
“My invention is the Cluck-n-go-fast. It is a quicker way to grab chickens. And get them into the coup. It will have an automatic net so you don’t have to run around chasing chickens.”
Your Goober Challenge is to safely catch 50 chickens and put them in their coup.
Leina tries all sorts of contraptions to catch free range chickens. First a RC car with a net controlled by an electric lock, it successfully chases down the chickens but will the lock trigger fast enough to catch them in the net?
Eventually Leina comes up with an ingenious fence that will round them up into their hutch for the night and opens up in the mornings. But will the fence be able to keep them in?
Episode 7 -
DART SUCKER Joel Mercer 13 from Botany Auckland
Joel - I’m a Nerf nut and love having Nerf wars with my mates. We fire hundreds and hundreds of darts at each other in insane battles that go on for hours. The key thing to this invention is a backpack that is light enough to wear in battle so that it can suck up the Nerf darts ready for re-loading.”
Joel has fun visiting Nerf Central Hasbro the home of Nerf. Here he gets the pick of the Nerf artillery and plenty of Nerf Darts to use for his invention.
Joel makes a backpack that sucks the darts up through his shoes and automatically feeds his high-powered Nerf Blaster.
Joels Goober Challenge is an all-out Nerf war between his Friends & Mr Metal, who will win & will the invention suck up enough Nerf darts to save Joel’s team?
Episode 8 -
P.I.U MACHINE Cole Douglas 10 from Christchurch
Hi my names Cole Douglas and I come from Christchurch. One of my BORING jobs is picking up pears in the garden. It’s soooo boring I decided to invent a machine to do it for me it’s horrible when you put your finger through a rotten pear. My invention will be remote controlled Fruit Picker Upper Machine or FPM for short. It will have a robotic arm for picking up the fruit so that when Dad hassles me to get up and do my job, I can lie in bed playing video games!”
Cole’s dream is to sit in bed playing Playstation whilst his machine does his work for him, letting him cash in on the $7 per week his Dad pays him to do it.
Mr. Metal motorized a bed and helps Cole attach a robot arm to do all the hard work. All from the comfort of lying in bed.
Coles Picker Upper gets turbo-charged with vacuum powered apple picker uppers. Still not picking up as many apples as he could by hand, Cole visits a local driving range and discovers and even better way of grabbing apples inspired by the golf ball picker upper machine.
Will it be a winning combination or will there be no dessert for Cole?
Episode 9 -
FETCH ROBOT (wall climbing robotic extention arm)
Sam Clark aged 10 from Clevedon Auckland
My invention has the ability to climb up walls, into gutters, upside down and onto the roof by remote control. It’s quite simple! There is a small camera mounted on it and a screen on the remote so you can see where you’re going. Once on the roof, its large robotic arm stretches out and grabs the object with its large claw. The claw/arm is also remote control. It climbs/drives up walls onto the roof and picks up stuff that’s up there.
Sam’s Goober Challenge is to build the WCREA Fetch-Bot and retrieve a Frisbee from the roof of a three story building remaining on the ground at all times.
Acron Plastics show Sam all about vacuum forming plastic and help him make essential parts for his invention.
Sam climbs a wall with his vacuum powered wall sucker at Rocknasium. And builds the retrieval device with help from AUSA’s Nick Mabey. Will the machine keeps its grip or will the Goober Challenge be out of Sams grasp?
